The origin of Yanshan University (YSU) can be traced back to the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) founded in 1920. In 1978, it was accredited as a national key institution of higher learning. YSU campus covers an area of 4,000 mu (or 267 hectares) with a total floor space of 1,060,000 m2 . At present, the university has a student population of 38,000 and a faculty and staff of 3,200, including 2,200 teachers, of which 466 are professors (including 219 doctoral advisors) and 634 associate professors. Among them there is one Academician of China Academy of Sciences, two distinguished professors from the Recruitment Program of Global Experts (Thousand Talents Plan), one professor from the Recruitment Program for Young Professionals, seven distinguished professors from the Changjiang Scholars Program, and nine winners of the China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists.
YSU has 11 postdoctoral research stations, 11 first level disciplines authorized to offer doctoral degree, 28 first level disciplines authorized to offer master degree, 10 disciplines authorized to offer professional master degree, 17 disciplines authorized to offer master degree of engineering, 64 undergraduate programs. With such a wide range of disciplines, YSU has become a multiversity with emphasis laid on engineering studies and importance attached to liberal arts, sciences, economics, management, law, fine arts, philosophy and education. YSU has 5 national key disciplines, 5 national defense key disciplines and 16 provincial key disciplines, and 2 of its disciplines (engineering and materials) are listed in the global top 1% of ESI.
With 20 schools and colleges, YSU has reached international leading-edge level in research fields of heavy machinery complete equipment, metastable materials science and technology, theory and technology of parallel robotics, fluid drive and electro-hydraulic servo control technology, theory and technology of industrial automatic control, precision plastic molding technology, forging technology and heat treatment techniques for large forgings, and mechanical structure and materials science under extreme conditions. YSU has won 17 national science and technology awards consecutively since 2000, including 2 First Prizes and 9 Second Prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 3 Second Prizes of National Technology Invention Award, and 3 Second Prizes of National Natural Sciences Award. YSU has undertaken more than 800 national research projects, including those funded by 973 Program, 863 Program as well as the National Natural Sciences Foundation and the National Social Sciences Foundation. In 2013 and 2014, two scientific research achievements were selected “China Top 10 Science Progress” and “Top 10 Science & Technology Progress of Chinese Universities”.

YSU actively fosters international academic exchanges and cooperation, and has built friendly cooperative ties with over 80 high-level universities and institutes of more than 20 countries including England, America, Canada, Germany, Russia, France, South Korea and Japan, carrying out international exchanges and cooperation in fields of student and teacher exchange, scientific research cooperation, cooperation in running school and cooperatively held conferences. At present, YSU has 200 foreign students from 43 countries all over the world, including Chinese learning students, undergraduate students, postgraduate students and PhD candidates. With both long-term and short-term Chinese programs offered to international students at elementary, intermediate and advanced levels, YSU is authorized to give HSK tests. YSU offers Hebei Province Government Scholarship and Yanshan University Scholarship to outstanding international students.
