Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

INTRODUCTION

Established in 1958, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was renamed as Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TUTCM) in 2006 and International University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was approved by State Education Committee (present Ministry of Education) in 1992. TUTCM is the teaching instructive director member of MOE in both TCM and Medical Humanistic Quality Education, and that of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS). The university was selected into China first-rate university and first-rate program list and Chinese Materia Medica has been selected into Double First-rate programs in 2017. The new campus of TUTCM is under construction which is located by Tuanbo Lake in Jinghai District, Tianjin. The new campus covers an area of more than 1.73km² and the building area is about 600,000m². The nationally largest museum of TCM, Chinese Medicine Botanical Garden, the nationally most advanced Science and Technology Park of TCM and International Education Center of TCM are all under construction in the new campus.

TUTCM takes undergraduate education as its main program, covering all areas of master’s, doctoral, international education and post-doctoral fellowships. The programs cover six categories of Medicine, Science, Arts, Management, Engineering, Education and 26 undergraduate programs. There are three first class doctoral programs in TCM, Chinese Materia Medica, Integrated Medicine of TCM and Western Medicine, 22 second class doctoral programs, seven first class master’s programs, 42 second class master’s programs, and three post-doctoral fellowships on TCM, Chinese Materia Medica, Integrated Medicine of TCM and Western Medicine. The university has 14 schools, two institutes, three affiliated hospitals and four teaching hospitals. The First Teaching Hospital is the State Center for Clinical Research, National Clinical Research Center for Acupuncture & Moxibustion

and National Clinical Center for Acupuncture & Moxibustion. The Second Teaching Hospital is the Center for TCM Rare Diseases. There are 12,621 students on the enrollment, in which 8,289 are undergraduates, 3,440 are postgraduates and 892 are international and students from H.K., Macao and Taiwan.

TUTCM has a distinguished faculty of over 3,600 people, in which 1,000 people have senior titles, three academicians of China Academy of Engineering, two TCM Masters, and many have been selected into Yangtze Scholars, Distinguished Young Scholars, National Excellent 10k Personnel Plan, New Century Million Talents Project, New Century Excellent Talents of MOE, Distinguished Experts of Ministry of Health (MOH) and etc. In recent years, two teams were approved as Innovation Teams of Key Areas of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), three teams as Innovation Teams of MOE. The university has received Five state teaching achievement awards (one grand prize), and hosts three Special Programs of State Higher Education, one state teaching team, two State Innovation Experiment Areas, two State Center for Experiment Teaching Demonstration, State Center for VR Experiment Teaching, six shared courses of State Quality Resources, one state bilingual demonstration course, and Educational Center for College Students Practice. TUTCM trained 5,198 international students from 68 countries or regions in the past five years, 5,827 participants from 80 countries or regions in special short-term training and training programs sponsored by MOE, Ministry of Commerce (MOC) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

The construction of the key programs and laboratories has been leading among TCM institutions in China. The university owns two state key programs, 28 provincial & ministerial key programs, two state key laboratories, 22 provincial & ministerial key laboratories, two provincial & ministerial engineering centers. Sino-Italian Joint Laboratory on TCM by MOST and Italian Ministry of Health, State Key Laboratory on Modern TCM (Nurturing), Modern Chinese Materia Medica Research and Development Center of International Bio-Medical Research Institute, MOE Key laboratory on TCM Prescription, Center for Modern TCM Discovery and Preparation Engineering, Tianjin Technology Center for TCM Component have been constructed.

Taking “Strengthening Moral Education and Pursuing Academic Studies, Inheriting and Innovating” as its motto, “Perfecting Medicine, Strengthening Pharmacy, Developing Health Related Programs and Expanding Social Services” as its strategy, key program construction and research as the advantage, TCM international education as feature, insisting “Regulating Inheritage and Innovation, Promoting Research and Service Simultaneously, Pursuing Connotation from Quality and Overall Developing”, TUTCM has developed into a teaching and research oriented university.
