In 1983, Shanghai University (former Shanghai Univeristy) was rebuilt by incorporating the branches of Fudan University, Shanghai International Studies University, East China Normal University, Shanghai University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Light Industry Machinery Institute and Shanghai Fine Arts College.
In May 1994, the new Shanghai University was established by incorporating Shanghai University of Technology (founed in 1960), Shanghai University of Science and Technology (founded in 1958), the former Shanghai Univeristy (founded in 1983), and Shanghai College of Science and Technology (founded in 1959).
Prof. QIAN Weichang was appointed as the President of Shanghai University of Technology in 1983, and served the position from 1994 to 2010. He was a famous scientist and educator, ourstanding social activist and senior academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. His unique edcuation philosophy and management strategies usher in a prosperous future for SHU, scoring significant achievements in various respects.
Shanghai University has three campuses, namely, Baoshan,Yanchang and Jiading campus, forming a pattern of “one body with two wings”. Shanghai University covers an area of nearly 2 million square meters, of which school buidings take up 1.2 million square meters. Covering 54,000 square meters, the library is stored with more than 4.01 million volumes of paper documents, subscribing 1828 sorts of newspaper and magazines, and 69 kinds of digital literature database, including 55,000 E-magazines and 1.9 million E-books. The whole campuses are equipped with high-speed network. In addition, modern gymnasiums are equipped with advanced sports facilities. A batch of new experimental teaching centers and multimedia classrooms are also in service.
Shanghai University has 26 colleges and 2 independent departments, covering a wide range of disciplines: natural science, engineering, literature, history, philosophy, economics, law, management, art, etc. There are nearly 40000 full-time students in Shanghai University,including 20902 undergraduates, 14310 postgraduates and 4361 international students.
Shanghai University is now on top of the list of unverisities across the nation in terms of academic achievements, soical influence, infrastructure and education quality. Our faculty members and students bear the university motto “Persistent Efforts for Self-improvement” meed in mind, and the “Realistic and Innovative” climate is pervasive.
