There are now more than 21, 000 undergraduates, 7, 000 postgraduates, 2,500 overseas students and 13, 000 night school students now learning in SHNU. For more than 60 years since the founding of the university, SHNU has cultivated 200,000 talents of various domains, and almost 70 percent of teachers and headmasters of the primary and middle schools in Shanghai are SHNU alumni.
At present the university owns 86 bachelor's degree programs which covered 11 disciplines, such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, etc.
At present the university confers doctorate degrees in 6 first-level disciplines,46 second-level disciplines, and runs 9 post-doctoral research stations, and grants master degrees in 29 first-level disciplines and 159 second-level disciplines and has 13 profession-related master’s degrees. Comparative literature and world literature is the national key discipline of SHNU. The SHNU African Studies Center is a research and development base of China Ministry of Education. The SHNU Resource Chemistry Lab is a key lab of China Ministry of Education and a collaborative lab of international cooperation. The SHNU Urban culture, SHNU computing science, SHNU comparative linguistics and SHNU International Comparative Education are the four Shanghai E-research institutes founded in SHNU.
SHNU boasts a high-quality academic staff of 2,915 teachers and researchers, including 1,831 full-time teachers, among which there are 300 professors (or equivalents) and 667 associate professors (or equivalentsl). Among the faculty members, 1,596 (86.1%) are master’s or doctor’s degree holders, among whom 948 are doctoral degree holders. In addition, the university has about 500 part-time teachers.
SHNU now has two campuses, Xuhui and Fengxian, covering an area of over 1, 550, 000 square meters (about 383 acres), 93, 000 square meters (about 23 acres) of classroom area, 299, 000 square meters (about 74 acres) of students dorm, and 72, 000 square meters (about 17.8 acres) of lab and self-learning room.The two campus libraries boast 3.5 million books, about 100 electronic library data bases and 8 characteristic data bases. The Shanghai University Ceramics Museum founded in SHNU is among one of the 10 largest of its kind in Shanghai. It has been named the title of China National Key Protection Site by the State Council of China for its storage of over 180, 000 ancient books with 1, 350 kinds of ancient rare books. It was awarded National Key Protection Institution of Ancient Records in 2009. Moreover, the Shanghai Ceramics Arts Museum being constructed in SHNU becomes one of the 10 largest university folk culture libraries of Shanghai. The sum value of fixed assets in SHNU is 2.403 billion Yuan RMB (about 349 million USD), and 644 million Yuan RMB (about 93.5 million USD) for education and scientific equipment.
