The conservatory has the authority to grant Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. It has developed a complete system covering elementary, secondary and higher education for music students. At present, there are 114 international students from twenty-nine countries studying at SHCM. Besides, a series of excellent art centres and outstanding establishments featuring a perfect combination of education, performing and academic research are available at SHCM, including the He Luting Concert Hall, a library with abundant historical literature and document collections, a flexible music research institute, a publishing house which has produced many high-end academic achievements and the Museum for Oriental Musical Instruments. Currently, another building SHCM Opera House is under construction. It will be a world class innovation and experiment center for opera and stage arts when it is completed.
Shanghai Conservatory of Music adheres to elite educational strategy and boasts a high-level faculty. In every phase of development, the conservatory has a lot of Chinese or world’s first-class artists and scholars teaching in each department and employed international well-known musicians as honorary professors or guest professors.
SHCM has always been maintaining close relationships and broad cooperation with the world’s first class conservatories and institutions. Up to now, we have established joint institutes with top music schools, including the Agreement on Educational Cooperation of SHCM and Royal College of Music London Joint Institute, SHCM-Berklee Modern Music Institute and Memorandum of Understanding Among SHCM and Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and The Fryderyk Chopin University of Music (Tri-Academy Alliance).We has also successfully held international conferences and forums annually such as Zhou Xiaoyan International Opera Master Class, International piano festival and New Music Week, etc.
Shanghai Conservatory of Music has provided students lots of opportunities to perform on stage. Over one hundred concerts were held in the conservatory each year. In recent years, SHCM faculty and students have won 1143 awards in 1067 competitions, such as the Besançon International Symphony Composition Competition, BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, International Franz Liszt Piano Competition, Paganini International Violin Competition, Marguerite LONG International Piano Competition, Concours International de Chant de la Ville de Toulouse, Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, Moscow International Accordion Competition and the Fumio Koizumi Prize. SHCM has long been reputed as “the cradle of musicians” due to the large number of music talents it has fostered.
