INTRODUCTION

Ludong University, located in Yantai, one of “The Best Charm Cities of China,” is a comprehensive university affiliated to Shandong Province, featuring arts, science, and engineering disciplines as its mainstay in its coordinated multidisciplinary pattern. Its history dates back to an educational institution founded in 1930 at Laiyang, eastern Shandong. In 2006, the higher institution was renamed as Ludong University. Over the past 80 and more years, Ludong University, adhering to its motto “Perfecting Morality, Pursuing knowledge, Progressing Gradually, Practicing Earnestly,” has worked hard and made great achievements in tertiary education, and fostered its style of “Pursuing Truth and Perfectness and Adoring Integrity and Practice.”

The campus of the university covers an area of 2,150 thousand square meters, with 1,030 thousand square meters of floor area. It owns one state-level Digital Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Foreign Languages and Literature, and three provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, devoted to computer basics, digital language and literature and biology, respectively. Currently, it has 1,488 full-time specialized teachers, and more than 30,000 regular students, including over 1,700 master and doctoral students and over 1,200 international students.

Ludong University has emphasized discipline-wise construction as the foundation for its all round development. In recent years, its disciplinary strength has kept increasing. At present, the university runs 22 schools, 5 research institutes, 1 postdoctoral research station, and 84 specialties for undergraduate programs, and offers 17 first-level discipline master-degree programs and 5 independent second-level discipline master-degree programs (covering 93 second-level discipline master-degree programs in total), 11 professional master programs including 28 specialties for admissions (fields), and 1 doctoral program. It boasts 9 “12^th Five-Year Plan” key disciplines of Shandong Province, 2 Shandong provincial key laboratories and 6 “13^th Five-Year Plan” key laboratories for higher institutions.

The university has adhered to talent cultivation as its central task and attached importance to scientific research. In recent years, its teaching and scientific research performance has kept enhancing. Since 2011, the beginning year of the 12^th Five-Year Plan of China, it has been in charge of a total of 177 state-level projects and 516 provincial and ministerial-level projects, and won over 90 scientific research awards on the provincial and ministerial level and above.

It has made efforts to conduct open education through international exchanges and cooperation, where it has made impressive achievements. As one of the earliest 200 universities authorized by the Ministry of Education of China to admit international students, it has established cooperative partnership with over 90 overseas universities and institutions, engaging in extensive and substantial cooperation in joint education, exchange of teachers and students, and academic exchange. At present, it runs Ulsan Ship and Ocean College, a Sino-foreign joint-education institute; Loire Confucius Institute in cooperation with Angers University and Catholic University of the West in France; and Yantai Sejong Institute in cooperation with Nambu University of Republic of Korea. By joining hands with many universities abroad, it has offered 4 cooperative education programs and a series of joint education programs based on the “2+2,” “3+1,”and “3+2” models.

Currently, under the leadership of the Central Committee of CPC with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core, Ludong University has focused on fostering morality and nurturing talents as its central task, intensified its effort to fortify its connotation as its theme on the basis of the disciplinary construction with its faculty construction as the key, and oriented its development to serving the national and local economic and social progress, by counting on reform and innovation as its source dynamics and strengthening its CPC discipline strictly as the fundamental guarantee, so as to render its education to be more information-based, modernized, and internationalized, thus shaping itself as a high level comprehensive university, first-class in Shandong Province and with considerable influence at home and abroad, which will be reputed for its own characteristic teaching and education, high quality performance in talent training, salient advantages in scientific research, and strong competence in serving the society.
