Since 1981, the school has become one of China’s first certified institutions to offer Master Degree. Since 1998, the school has been authorized to offer Doctor Degree. In 2012, Kunming Medical College was approved to retitle as Kunming Medical University (KMU), and was brought in one of the initiating universities of National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Middle. During the 86 years, over 100,000 graduates of KMU entrench themselves in the frontier of the country and serve in the primary level of the society which make an outstanding contribution to the development of medical and health service, the development of economic and social, the progress of national unity and the prosperity and the stabilization of the frontier region of Yunnan province.
KMU has 3 campuses with Chenggong Campus as the main campus, plus West Renmin Road Campus and Pingzheng Campus totally occupying 98.8 hectares. The university has 6222 staff and faculties (1586 from the main campus and 4636 from the affiliated hospitals). The university now has 13806 full-time undergraduates, 3214 postgraduates and 512 international students, 24189 adult undergraduates and junior college students. After decades' development, a thorough medical educational system has been established which includes full-time higher education of medicine (for Bachelor, Master, and Doctor), graduate medical education, continuing medical education and international education.
The university has 18 schools (departments) and offers 32 majors of Bachelor degree. The university also offers 4 majors of national specialty, 1 national exquisite course, 2 national demonstration center of experimental teaching and 1 national sharing course of exquisite resources and 11 national projects of teaching reform. The university is qualified to confer Master's Degree in the first batch. The university has 3 doctoral program of first-class discipline (including clinical medicine, basic medicine and pharmacy), and 1 professional doctoral program (clinical medicine), 7 master programs of first-class discipline (including basic medicine, clinical medicine, stomatology, public health and preventive medicine, pharmacy, nursing and medical technology), 5 master programs of second-class discipline (including physiology, neurobiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, social medicine and health management, clinical and integrated Chinese and Western medicine), and 6 professional master programs (clinical medicine, stomatology, public health, nursing, pharmacy and applied psychology). After a long development, the university has formed integrated medical talent training system of full-time higher medicine (bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctor's degree) education, post-graduate education, medical continuing education, and foreign student education. The discipline of clinical medicine emerges in the top 1% of global ESI.
The university gains a lot of awards for science and technology which includes 7 National awards and 124 awards from Ministries and Committees of China. More over, in recent years, the university gains 4 special awards and 8 first prize of Provincial Technology Award. The university is carrying 446 programs of the national scientific research by expending over 150 million RMB of scientific research fund annually, which leads the 3rdplace in Yunnan Province. The university now has 1 international cooperative joint laboratory of Ministry of Education, 2 National accredited laboratories (centers), 56 provincial laboratories, centers and bases.Journal of Kunming Medical Universityis the national core journal of science and technology.
The practice environment of the university is a well prepared practice network, which can meet all the teaching and practicing demands by operating 4 direct subordinate hospitals, 12 indirect subordinate hospitals, 11 hospitals with teaching programs, 43 hospitals with practicing programs, 19 practice teaching bases of communities, and 41 practice teaching bases of relative specialties. The First and The Second Affiliated Hospitals are general hospitals of Top Grade Top Level (namely “Grade III Level A”) in Yunnan province. The Third Affiliated Hospital is as well the “Grade III Level A” in tumor specialty and The Affiliated Stomatological Hospital is a Grade III in stamotological specialty and both of them are of the highest level in their specialties in Yunnan province.
The university has established exchange and communication relationship with more than 80 universities from 26 countries as well as the universities from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions of China. The university, titled as “International Medical Professionals Training Base” of Yunnan Province, is among the first institutions to enroll international students of National Government Scholarship, and with the approval from Ministry of Education the university is cultivating international students of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The school was approved to enroll international students in 1998. In the year of 2004, the school was approved to enroll and to train international students of Yunnan Government Scholarship. In 2010, the school was approved and started its MBBS program. and in 2011, the school was approved to enroll international students of CSC Scholarship (Chinese Government Scholarship). Since the year 1998, the school has cultivated more than 900 international students.
The school attaches importance to social services and actively carries out continuing education and training for medical and related personnel. To assume social responsibility, the school strengthens cooperation with localities and carries out support in the field of education, medical care, science and technology, and culture. In recent years, the university has won honorary titles such as Yunnan Civilization Unit, Yunnan Civilization School, Yunnan Advanced Collective in Ideological and Political Work, Yunnan Province Advanced Collective in Social Poverty Alleviation, Yunnan Advanced Collective in Ethnic Unity and Progress and the Peaceful Campus. The school is also a Model Unit in Saving among national public organizations.
