In 1983, the administration of the College was transferred to Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government. In 1993, the College was upgraded once again and renamed Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT). Occupying an area of 215 hectares (3,227 mu), the University consists of three campuses: Xincheng campus, Jinchuan campus and Junggar campus.

    Centering around the traditional engineering disciplines, Inner Mongolia University of Technology has now grown into a multidisciplinary university with distinct features of its own 66 years of development, offering undergraduate bachelor’s, postgraduate master’s and PhD programs in as diverse branches of learning as technology, sciences, social sciences and humanities, economics, management, law, education and art. At present, there are 25 colleges (divisions or centers) and 62 research institutes in the University. 1 post-doctoral station, 3 first-level discipline PhD programs, 1 second-level discipline PhD programs ( Excluding the first-level discipline programs ), 19 first-level discipline master programs, 10 second-level discipline master programs (Excluding the first-level discipline programs ) and 14 specialized master programs of engineering are offered at the University. The University is also capable of conferring such professional master’s degrees as MBA and MEM. Altogether, 69 bachelor programs are offered at the University. Due to its high quality of teaching, the University is qualified to select and send its top undergraduate graduates to do their master’s studies at other universities and colleges without the requirement of these students taking the entrance exam. At present, over 22,000 bachelors and associate degree undergraduate students, over 4,400 postgraduate master students and PhD students are enrolled as fulltime students at the University.

    From the “12th Five-year Plan Period”, more than 1,600 research projects have been carried out by the faculty with grants from the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation, the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (The 863 Program) or the National Science and Technology Support Program. The University has won 50 significant provincial and the State level research and development awards, including 2 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Advancement Award and 19 prizes of Inner Mongolia Science and Technology Advancement Award and the first and second prizes of Inner Mongolia Science Award and 29 prizes of the first, second and third prizes of the government award of outstanding achievements in the philosophy and social sciences of Inner Mongolia. More than 200 patents have been granted and over 2,000 academic papers have been published on academic journals collected by SCI, EI, ISTP and CSSCI.

    The University employs a faculty and staff of 2,026 people, including 1,312 faculty members. Among all the faculties, there are 178 professors, 421 associate professors, 54 PhD student tutors and 557 masters’ student tutors. 89.71% of the faculty members hold either the PhD degrees or the master’s degrees. Among all the faculties, 72 either received special allowances from the State Council or were awarded the honor of “The Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Experts”, 1 person became the candidate of “The State Talent Project” (Level 1 and 2) 9 won the prize of “Inner Mongolia Excellent Talent”, 12 became the candidates of “The Project of Excellent Talents of the New Century” launched by the State Ministry of Education, 48 became the candidates of “Inner Mongolia Grassland Talents Project”, 7 research teams were awarded “The Grassland Talents Innovation Team”, 42 became the candidates of “The New Century 321 Talent Project of Inner Mongolia” (Level 1 and 2), 11 became the candidates of “The 111 Higher Education Talent Project of Inner Mongolia” (Level 1 and 2), and 14 were selected as the candidates for “The Inner Mongolian Project of Support for Scientific and Technological Talents”. A great number of well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad have been employed as guest professors of the University.

    At present, the University has 5 feature disciplines approved by the State Ministry of Education, 4 undergraduate programs of study selected as the experimental programs for cultivating outstanding engineers, 1 national level engineering training center for college students, 1 national level undergraduate program of study to be renovated, 1 provincial level undergraduate program of study to be renovated, 4 provincial level undergraduate programs of study selected as key programs for support by the regional government, and 25 brand undergraduate programs of study of Inner Mongolia. The University has 1 engineering research center jointly supported by the Central government and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region government, 8 provincial level demonstrative centers of experimental teaching, 18 autonomous regional teaching teams, 16 teaching masters in the autonomous region.

    In 2006, the University was rated “Excellence” in the appraisal of the teaching and education quality of the undergraduate programs of study by the Ministry of Education. In 2012, The University was rated among the Top 50 Best Graduate Employment Universities. In 2016 The University became one of the national mid-west university foundation ability construction project (phase ii) support colleges and universities, and it is one of the first batch of the 32 national college students' cultural quality education bases approved by the Ministry of Education. The University was designated by the Ministry of Education as one of the first 32 national level culture and all-round education bases for college students. Other honors won by the University include “The Model University for Party Construction and Ideological and Political Work”, “The Model University for Student Employment”, “The Model Educational Institution”, “The Model University for Ideological and Political Work”, “The Model University for Civics Development”, “The Model University for Students Work”, “The Model University for Talent Cultivation” and “The Model University for Promoting Harmony Between Ethnic Groups”.

    The University adheres to the concept of open education, has been active in international cooperation and exchanges. Regular cooperative relations have been established with over 56 universities of 19 countries, including Purdue University in the U.S., Meiji University in Japan and University of Quebec in Canada. In 2005 the university was approved to provide the Inner Mongolia Government Scholarship to the students of Mongolia. In 2007, the University was approved to provide the Chinese Government Scholarship to the overseas students.

    Embracing the university motto of “be learned and practical while pursuing high ideals and moral values”, the University has built up an academic tradition of “seeking truth for its application in the real life”. In the 66 years since its establishment, more than 150,000 students have graduated from this University. Our alumni can be found in diverse industries and professions both in and out of Inner Mongolia, many of whom have become the leaders and backbones of large and medium sized enterprises, the experts and scholars of institutions of higher education and research institutes and the key figures of the Party and government agencies at various levels. Standing at this new starting point of history, through continuing with the education reform, Inner Mongolia University of Technology will strive to improve the teaching quality and services to society, making greater contributions to the social and economical developments of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and China through active participations. Under the leadership of the Party and the government, Inner Mongolia University of Technology will work hard and be innovative so as to build the University into a high quality one with distinct features in both teaching and research.
