After more than 60 years of development, the university has now become a teaching and research university based on engineering and combined with sciences, with the coordinated development of economics, management, philosophy, literature, law, education and the arts, featuring with strong educational strength and distinctive characteristics. It is approved by the Ministry of Education to recruit international students and Chinese Government Scholarship students. The university has 4 campuses, of which 3 in Harbin (east, west and south), 1 in Rongcheng City, Shandong Province. The current staff number is 2933, and there are 33220 full-time students.

The university has 18 schools, 2 teaching departments and 1 teaching practice center, 60 undergraduate majors, 1 junior college major, 8 national first-class specialties, 3 national-level Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program pilot program, 1 national undergraduate major of comprehensive reform pilot program; there are 6 First-level doctoral degree authorized disciplines, 21 Second-level doctoral authorized disciplines, 21 First-level master degree authorized disciplines, 90 Second-level master degree authorized disciplines,5 professional master's degree authorization categories and 27 professional master's degree programs, 4 national defense specialty disciplines. There are post-doctoral research stations in seven disciplines such as electrical engineering, instrumentation science and technology, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, management science and engineering, business administration, computer science and technology. High-voltage and insulation technology is the national key discipline, and there are 10 provincial-level key disciplines, 11 provincial and ministerial key laboratories (Engineering Centers). There are 4 provincial University-Enterprise Joint Research Center and 1 Class A qualification architectural design institute; 1 National University Science Park, 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 6 national engineering practice education centers, 2 National college students practice education bases.

The university adheres to the connotation construction and extension of the combination of the school policy, and continuously expand the international exchange and cooperation channels, and now has established long-term and stable cooperative relationship with 60 universities and institutes of more than 20 countries in Europe, the Americas and Asia Pacific region, actively carrying out substantive cooperation such as joint training of students, academic exchanges among teachers and cooperative scientific research, and continuously improving the school's schooling ability and overall strength.
