INTRODUCTION

Located in the southwest of Shanghai, a center of commerce, finance, culture and industrial production of China, founded in 1952 and originally called East China College of Chemistry and Engineering, ECUST is the first national key university featuring chemical engineering disciplines in P.R.C, one of the state-run and full-time institutions of higher education, one of the research-oriented national key universities directly regulated by the Ministry of Education of China, one of the National 211 Project key construction universities, one of the National “985 Project” Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform for high-level universities and one of the Double First- class initiative universities. Five disciplines rank top 1% in the world according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) Database, namely Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Biology and Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology. Besides, the Chemical Engineering and Technology Program has successfully passed the review of the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) in 2014 and become the first university in China that has done so.

ECUST possesses 3 campuses, 20 schools and colleges covering 68 Bachelor’s programs, 196 Master’s programs, 95 Doctoral programs, of which there are 1 English-taught major for bachelor students, 16 English-taught majors for master students, and 20 English-taught majors for PH.D. students. Moreover, there are 12 postdoctoral research centers, 7 national key disciplines, 1 national key discipline (Nurturing), 10 provincial key disciplines, 7 provincial first-class disciplines and 3 double first-class initiative disciplines. It also has over 3000 faculty, 26000 current students including about 1400 international students from 100 countries.

As an eligible university authorized by the Ministry of Education to enroll international students since 1956, ECUST has over 60 years' experience in teaching and serving for over tens of thousands of international students from more than 140 countries.

Founded in 2006, College of International Education, located on the main campus in Xuhui district, is a bridge and bond between international students and the university. It is responsible for recruitment, enrollment, academic affairs coordination and service of all international students coming to ECUST. International students can apply for a bachelor, master or doctoral degree program or visiting program offered by ECUST, as well as long-term or short-term Chinese language and culture program and various customized programs. Given the student-orientated management policies, CIE always bears the interests of the students in mind and is committed to build up an efficient and effective learning platform and comfortable living environment for all the international students at ECUST.
